Q:What's unreality? I'm not really following that post about where they are referring to Ryan as Jack. I mean I wasn't bothered at all by it. I know that doesn't mean other people weren't, but even when something doesn't bother me, I can normally understand why it may bother other people, but for this one I just don't understand. You could easily tell it was Ryan and they were just making fun of the fact that (back when it was recorded) some people would mistake them.
[discussion of unreality and its effects below]
Unreality is a blanket term that generally refers to things that are blatantly untrue but are presented as though they were fact, particularly when reality itself is questioned. You’ve probably experienced it before, but never given a name to it. A good example is Welcome to Night Vale, a surrealist podcast about a quiet desert town inhabited by, among other things, angels who do not exist, hooded figures who hum but do not speak, bloodthirsty librarians, and a five-headed dragon on the run for tax evasion. Another potentially more harmful example is often seen on tumblr - I’m sure you’ve come across posts that say something like “If you can read this, you’re in a coma. Your family misses you very much. Please wake up soon.”
In people who experience depersonalization, derealization, and other similar mental states, this can cause severe anxiety, because it leads them to question whether what they perceive to be real is actually reality, whether they actually inhabit a physical body, or whether they even exist at all.
